*DAVID CARNELL
Assistant Softball Coach

Beginning in the early 1970s as an assistant football coach, David Carnell has been a valued member of the Northeast Athletic Department.  In 2006-07 Carnell will serve the department as assistant softball coach for the second straight year.

Coach Carnell took over the women’s softball program in 1993, and led the switch to fast pitch competition following the 2000 season.  Under his guidance the Tigers won five consecutive North Division titles, including four outright championships.  In 2003, in only their third year of fast pitch competition, Carnell and his staff led the Northeast women to a Region 23 Championship and a National Tournament appearance in Fort Dodge, Iowa.  In recognition of those accomplishments, Carnell was named the NJCAA Region 23 Division II Coach of the Year.

In 2004 Carnell’s team earned him fast pitch victory number 150.

Nominated by Coach Jody Long, Carnell was a NJCAA Loyalty Award recipient in the spring of 2005.  The Loyalty Award is voted on by the regional directors and given to an active athletic director at a member college who has been nominated by a colleague from a member institution, and who has worked to uphold the ideals of the NJCAA. Significant to this award is leadership in an athletic program exemplifying excellence both on the field and in the classroom.

For 24 years Coach Carnell walked the football field sidelines.  He coached at Biggersville High School for three years before coming to Northeast as an assistant coach on Coach Bill Ward’s staff in 1972.  Following Ward’s retirement from the sidelines after the 1982 campaign, Carnell did a three-stint as the Tigers’ head football coach from 1983-85, but has primarily served as offensive line coach under four other head coaches.

Fittingly Carnell followed Ward into the athletic director’s chair in 1996 and served in that capacity until 2005.

Coach Carnell has a bachelor’s degree from Mississippi State University and a master’s degree from the University of Mississippi.

David and his wife Pat have three children; Heather, Holly, and David III, and three grandchildren; Bo, Lydia and Emma Kate.
