Former Northeast Tiger Jeff Melson took over the reins of the Northeast tennis program from Ricky Smither following the Tigers and Lady Tigers' appearances in the NJCAA Div. III National Tournaments at the end of the 2008 tennis season and led the Lady Tiger tennis team to a sixth place finish in the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) state tournament in 2009.

Melson’s guidance landed the Lady Tiger team in a sixth place finish but only three points out of fourth place. Melson also watched as five Lady Tigers reached the semifinals of the state tournament while a men’s doubles event made it into the quarterfinals of the 2009 state event.

Melson, who played for former NEMCC tennis coach Millard Lothenore, competed at the top ranked seeds in both the men' s singles and men' s doubles action during his two years at NEMCC.

During his seasons at Northeast, he was selected as captain of the tennis team and captured the prestigious Tiger Award.

Prior to coming to Northeast, Melson competed for the Baldwyn Bearcats and with double partner, Davy Joe McBrayer had hand in capturing a pair of division championships, three Tombigbee Conference championships and was a two-time runner-up in the Mississippi High School Activities Association' s tennis championships.

Melson was selected All State twice and finished his high school career with a record of 736.

Melson graduated from the Computer Aided Drafting program in 1997 and returned to teach as an adjunct professor for one year before accepting a job as a drafting instructor.

Melson is currently pursuing a degree in business from the University of Mississippi and has plans to further his education with a Master' s degree in Education after finishing his business degree.

Melson and his wife, Jenny has been married for 11 years and have a four year old daughter Lilly. The Melson family resides in the Booneville area.
