NORTHEAST SWEEPS COAHOMA IN CLARKSDALE

CLARKSDALE, Miss.—Northeast Mississippi Community College’s men and women’s basketball teams were able to get the job done against Coahoma Community College on Monday night in Clarksdale.

The Tigers (11-10, 6-5) rallied in the second half after trailing 31-26 at the break to pull off the victory on a final score of 72-63.

Leading the way for NEMCC was Nick Tate who finished with 12 points followed by teammates Tyler Pritchard and Tyrie Berry who combined for 20 points and 17 rebounds on the evening.  Kayo Taylor also had a strong performance pulling down 11 boards along with nine points.

“It was great to pick up the win here on the road,” Taylor said.  We pulled together as a team in the second half but we need to get better handling the ball and be stronger with it to cut down on our turnovers.”

Northeast committed 19 turnovers in the game compared to 18 by Coahoma however, Robbins’ unit shot an impressive 72 percent from the charity stripe with Coahoma only able to hit 36 percent of its shots at the foul line.

In game one of the double header, Coach Ricky Ford’s ladies cruised to a 72-42 win improving to 7-12 overall and 5-6 in the north.

Top performers for Coach Ford were Al’Lisha Hudson, who had a game high 23 points along with 11 rebounds, Leota Cornelius added 14 points and five boards, while Amber Johnson dropped in 10.

Sophomore Miranda Phillips was as equally impressive on the night with her eight point seven rebound game that helped push Northeast in the right direction after a slow start.

“We started off really slow at first," Phillips said.  But after the half time break we picked up the pace and we realized that in order for us to win we had to start playing harder and lay it all on the line.  And that's what we did and the outcome ended up being what we wanted…..a win.”

Northeast will continue its MACJC North Division play when the Lady Tigers and Tigers face the East Mississippi Community College Lions and Lady Lions at Bonner Arnold Colesium on Thursday, February 18.

Thursday night will also be a night where Northeast will honor its sophomores before the start of each game.  With the Tigers still in the playoff hunt, Robbins will look for his upper classmen to have a big night on the hardwood.

Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men’s contest.
