HARRELSON JOINS NEMCC BASEBALL STAFF BOONEVILLE, Miss.--Dr. Johnny Allen, President of Northeast Mississippi Community College, announced today the hiring of Richy Harrelson as assistant baseball coach. Harrelson comes to NEMCC from Lafayette County High School where he was head baseball coach for the Commodores from 2001-07. “We’re optimistic that Coach Harrelson brings good coaching knowledge,” Dr. Allen said. “He also brings enthusiasm to our team, and to our college.” Harrelson, who played third base and pitched for the Ole Miss Rebels from 1993-96, began his coaching career as an assistant at Ole Miss in 1997, before moving to Hillcrest Christian School in Jackson in 1998 where he was assistant baseball coach, assistant football coach, and taught world history until 2001. Later in 2001 Harrelson accepted the head baseball coaching position at Lafayette County H.S. He led the Commodores to their first winning season in five years in 2003. Since the ’03 campaign, Harrelson coached the ‘Dores to four consecutive playoff appearances in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. His 2006 Lafayette County squad captured the Division, North-Half, and 4A State titles en-route to finishing the season ranked as the top ranked team in Mississippi among all classifications. “We could not have hired a better coach than Richy Harrelson,” said NEMCC head coach Kent Farris. “He’s a winner and he’s proven it wherever he’s been, as a player and as a coach. He has a unique ability in getting young players to start reaching their potential as individual players, while also getting them to play as a team, and function as a team, and ultimately win as a team. Our program just got a lot better with Richy coming on board.” A Tishomingo County native who spent his prep days at Iuka High School, Harrelson says the situation was a great fit for both parties. “My roots are here in Northeast Mississippi,” Harrelson said, “and my roots are very close to Northeast (Mississippi Community College). I grew up just right up the road in Iuka. Coach Farris and I have been friends for a long time and I’m really looking forward to working with him. I’m probably most looking forward to working with these young kids in this program, and doing my part to take Northeast to a new level in baseball. The potential is definitely there to build a winning program, and I can’t wait to get started.” ###
