NEMCC BASEBALL PICKS UP TWO TRANSFERS

May 25, 2007

BOONEVILLE, Miss.-- Northeast Mississippi Community College baseball coach Kent Farris continued to add to his 2007-08 roster on Saturday with the addition of two community college transfers. Infielder Derrick Green from Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Ala., and infielder Jason Chism from Holmes Community College have signed to play for the Northeast Tigers beginning in the fall of 2007.

"It's been quite a weekend for us so far," said Farris. "Friday it became official that Richy (Harrelson) was coming in as a new assistant coach, and today we pick up two kids with a year of experience at this level who are really good ballplayers. Derrick is a solid second baseman. Jason's home is close to here and he decided to come back. I'm glad he did because he's a tough kid who can swing the bat and play third base, first base, and maybe some shortstop as well."

Jason Chism played for the South Pontotoc Cougars in High School. The right-handed hitter batted .300 with 34 hits, ten doubles, one homerun, and 22 RBI on a Holmes team that went 21-24-1 this past season.

Derrick Green appeared in 20 games for Wallace-Hanceville in 2007 on a Lions team that went 40-10. As a senior at Muscle Shoals High School (Ala.) in 2006, Green batted .380 with 20 doubles, one triple, and three homeruns while only striking out eight times in 130 plate appearences. The right-handed hitter was a first-team All-State selection by the Birmingham News following his junior and senior seasons at Muscle Shoals.

"Picking up these two kids," said Kent Farris, "is just another example that things are moving in the right direction for our program. They bring a year of college experience to our team. They're eager to get in here and learn from me and Richy. We're really excited about these two guys."
