TIGERS START 2-0 IN DIVISION;
HAVE WON 4-STRAIGHT; 9 OF LAST 12.

March 20, 2007

BOONEVILLE, Miss.--Northeast Mississippi Community College baseball coach Kent Farris, in his 2nd season at the helm of the Tigers' program, has this year's team off to a 2-0 MACJC North Division start thanks to a double-header sweep of Miss. Delta CC, 5-4, and 7-6 on Tuesday, March 18, in Booneville.

Northeast (14-8, 2-0) has now won four straight games, and nine out of the last twelve.

"We're seeing some positive things from our team during the early part of the season," said Farris. "We've won some close games, like the two against Delta this week. We've been able to come from behind a few times, and we've been able to close games out. Those are all things that we didn't do last year. We've got a ton of work to do still, but I'm happy with where we are right now."

In game-one versus MDCC, Chase Porch (East Union) improved to 4-1 on the mound by pitching 5 1/3 innings giving up four runs on six hits. Patrick Hinton (Kossuth) stepped in and closed the door in an inning and 2/3, giving up just one hit and garnering his fourth save of the season. At the plate, Drew Dillard (East Union) and Phillip Chapman (Clinton) each had home runs.

Game two saw the Tigers fall behind 5-2, until Rod Williams' game-tying, three-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth sparked a five-run inning as the Tigers held on for the 7-6 win. Trey Griffin (Houston) improved to 2-0 on the mound while Shelby Robertson (Ridgeland) recorded his first save of the season.

Up next for Northeast: the Tigers will host East Mississippi CC in a 1 p.m. double-header on Friday, March 21, at Harold T. White field in Booneville.
