NEMCC SWEEPS DOUBLE-HEADER @ SW TENNESSEE

February 21, 2007

MEMPHIS, Tenn.--  After dropping the first two games of the season, the Northeast Mississippi Community College baseball team evened its record at 2-2 by winning both games of a double-header against Southwest Tennessee Community College on Tuesday, February 20, in Memphis, Tenn.

Game one saw Shelby Robertson (Ridgeland) pitch for Northeast into the fifth inning, giving up just four hits and recording two strikeouts. Jeremy Owens (Booneville) came on in relief to face eight batters, giving up just one hit and retiring the next seven including two stikeouts. At the plate in game one Northeast scored compiled 11 hits in the 8-2 victory. Rod Williams (Booneville) and Chris Lucius (Mooreville) each had three hits in the game. Lucius and Blake Woodruff (Wheeler) each had three RBI.

It took the Tigers just five innings to get the job done in game two, scoring 13 runs on 13 hits in a ten-run-rule victory, 13-3. Kevin Williams (Corinth), a quarterback on the Northeast football team in 2006, got the win on the mound pitching four complete innings. Stacey Riley (Selmer, Tenn.) closed out the game in the fifth. John David Horn (Booneville) had a big game at the plate with three hits and three RBI. Boomer Brown (New Hope) also added three hits for the Tigers, while Jake Lee (Tupelo) and Drew Dillard (East Union) each had two hits.

“It’s certainly nice to get in the win column,” said Tigers’ coach Kent Farris. “Winning these two games will really help our confidence. Now we’ve got a week off to work on some things before we play again. But, overall I’m pleased with the way we’re hitting the ball.”

Northeast (2-2, 0-0) will travel to face Northwest Shoals Community College in Muscle Shoals, Ala., on Tuesday, February 27, for a double-header scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
