BURDETTE'S 29 LEADS NEMCC PAST HOLMES

GOODMAN, Miss.-- Northeast Mississippi Community College’s men’s basketball team traveled to face defending state champion Holmes CC on Monday night, January 14, and came away with a convincing 93-80 win propelling Coach David Robbins’ Tigers to 2-1 in MACJC (Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges) North Division play. Northeast’s men are now 9-6 overall on the season.

“This was by far our sharpest and best performance of the season,” said Robbins. “Everything came together at once for us. We shot the ball well, were almost perfect from the free throw line, and defended well against a team that’s bigger and faster than we are. Now we’ve got to move forward and build on this.”

Northeast jumped out to an 18-point halftime lead, thanks to shooting 84% from the field (14-of-17) and a perfect 11-of-11 at the free throw line in the opening frame. The Tigers finished the night with a 23-of-24 mark at the free throw line and put four players in double figures.

Redshirt freshman forward William Burdette (New Albany) led all scorers with 29 points on 11-of-11 shooting from the field, and 7-of-7 at the foul line. Burdette’s total is a season high for the 6’2 post player, and gives him a string of eight, consecutive games in double-digit scoring.

Sophomore guard Travis Lee (Tallahassee, FL) was three points better than his season average with 24 total points including four three-point baskets, and a perfect 8-of-8 shooting night at the free throw line.

Ken Moore (Tallahassee, FL) added 14 points, while Andre’ Thomas added 10.

Northeast will host men’s and women’s basketball games versus Northwest Community College on Thursday, January 17. Tipoff for the women’s game is set for 6 p.m., with the men to follow at 8 p.m.

The games will be broadcast live on the radio on WKZU, 102.3 fm.
