FOUR LOCAL H.S. STANDOUTS INK WITH NEMCC

BOONEVILLE, Miss.-- Northeast Mississippi Community College head men’s basketball coach David Robbins opened his 2008 signing class in fine fashion, signing four local standouts to letters of intent to play for NEMCC beginning in the fall of the year.

Grant Goolsby (Myrtle), Bruce Jacobs (Horn Lake), Nick Tate (Marshall Acadamy), and Spence Wicks (Booneville) all inked with Northeast at a signing party held at Myrtle Attendance Center on Tuesday, April 8.

“We signed some outstanding young men today,” Robbins said. “All of these kids are tough, intense, and talented basketball players. They’re also fine students, great kids. This group is going to have a lot of fun together at Northeast.”

Goolsby led the Myrtle Hawks to the 1A state title game and a 31-6 record as a senior by averaging 12.7 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game. In 2008, the point guard shot 85% from the free throw line. Following his senior campaign, Goolsby was named All-County, All-Hill Country Conference, All-Division, All-State Tournament Team, and All-State Honorable Mention by the Jackson Clarion Ledger.

Bruce Jacobs was a star at Horn Lake H.S. on and off the court. As a 6’5 shooting guard for HLHS, Jacobs averaged 14 points, 5.08 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per contest during his senior season. In the classroom, Jacobs has recently been named a Who’s Who All-American Scholar, as well as being named Mr. Horn Lake by his peers.

Nick Tate had an outstanding career at Marshall Acadamy and capped things off with a spectacular senior season. The guard averaged 20.1 points per contest. Combined with 4.0 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per contest, Tate’s numbers were good enough to earn him MPSA All-Star, and District-1 AA MVP honors.

Spence Wicks led the Booneville Blue Devils in both scoring and rebounding. The 6’5 post player averaged 17.2 points and 8.7 rebounds per contest. Weeks’ 60.4% shooting clip from the field led BHS in 2008, and his free throw percentage of 58.3% was fifth best among teammates that appeared in 30 games or more. The athletic big-man averaged 1.5 steals and 1.0 block per contest.
