TIGERS' LAST MINUTE FG ATTEMPT SAILS WIDE-LEFT BOONEVILLE, Miss.-- Northeast Mississippi Community College saw an excellent chance for its first football win of the season sail wide left of the uprights with :18 seconds remaining as the Northwest CC Rangers took a slim 26-24 MACJC North Division victory in Senatobia, Miss., on Thursday, September 20. Sophomore receiver Anthony Jones (Tallahassee, FL) got the scoring started for the Tigers when he hauled in a first quarter touchdown toss from quarterback Emanuel Francis (Tallahassee, FL), putting the Tigers on top 7-0. After a Jonathon Beard (Weir) field goal in the 2nd quarter, the Tigers went in to halftime tied 10-10 with the homestanding Rangers. The third quarter of action belonged to Northeast, as Francis notched his second touchdown pass of the night to Anthony Jones, while the Tiger defense held Northwest to just three 3rd-quarter points. A fake punt attempt by Jonathon Beard in the fourth quarter failed to earn a first down, and after taking over at midfield, the Northwest Rangers' offense put together a 7-play, 60-yard scoring drive to take the lead 19-17. Down 26-17 with 6:09 to play in the game, Francis engineered another scoring drive that went 72 yards in just three plays, ending in a 35 yard touchdown pass to Travis Griffin (Patterson, LA). Beard's extra point made it a two-point game 26-24 with 1:04 remaining. Head Coach Andy Greening called for an onside-kick, and C.J. Foster (Tuscumbia, AL) came up with the recovery for the Tigers at their own 40-yard line. After moving the ball to the Northwest 11 yard line, the Tigers decided to give Jonathon Beard a shot at 28-yard game winning field goal with :18 seconds on the clock. The kick sailed wide-left, giving Northwest the narrow two point win, 26-24. Northeast will look for its first win of 2007 when the Tigers host Itawamba Community College (3-1, 1-0) on Thursday night, September 27, at Keenum Stadium in Booneville. The game can be heard live on WKZU, 102.3 fm, or on live streaming audio at www.kudzu102.com. ### |
