NEMCC SOPH. CHASE WILLIAMS RANKED 5th IN D-III

May 31 , 2007

BOONEVILLE, Miss.-- Northeast Mississippi Community College sophomore golfer Chase Williams sports a 75.8 scoring average through ten rounds this season heading into next week’s NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) D-III National Tournament in Chautauqua, New York, good enough to earn the Alcorn Central native a No. 5 national ranking as an individual.

Northeast golf coach Craig Lauderdale, a former NJCAA All-American at NEMCC, says Williams is deserving of the honor.

“I think he legitimately is one of the best in the country,” said Lauderdale. “The best golfer in terms of average scores in D-III this year was (Colin) Dolph from Nassau (Community College) and he averages 74.8, which is only one stroke better than Chase. Throw in the fact that Chase shot a 68 at the Region XXIII tournament last year as a freshman and earned himself a trip to the Division II National Tournament individually, and it’s obvious that he’s one of the best in Division III this year, no doubt.”

Williams earned medalist honors at the season opening tournament in Wesson with a round of 72. Later in the season, the Tigers’ sophomore shot a season low round of 1-under, 71 at the Northwest Invitational at Mallard Pointe in Sardis.

“I always enjoy trying to beat guys that are better than me,” Williams said. “I’m actually playing better now than I have all season. So I’m looking forward to going up there and trying to win it.”

Williams and his NEMCC teammates haven’t competed in a NJCAA event in well over a month. The last tournament for the Tigers was on April 16-17 at Co-Lin Community College in Wesson, one in which Northeast claimed the 2007 State/Region XXIII championship.

“Some of us have played a couple of tournaments together since the last tournament of the season,” Williams explained. “So we’ve gotten a little bit of team play in. We’ve been practicing by ourselves for the past month now, working on the small things that we had problems with during the season, and getting our game tuned up for the big tournament.”

Northeast will practice at Jamestown Country Club in Chautauqua, New York, on Sunday, June 3, and Monday, June 4. Tournament play will be Tuesday through Friday, June 5 – 8, with 18-holes per day for a total of 72 holes for the tournament. The team with the lowest total score after day four will be dubbed National Champions.
