THREE LOCAL STANDOUTS SIGN
WITH NORTHEAST GOLF
June 20 , 2007
BOONEVILLE, Miss.-- On Wednesday, June 20, Northeast Mississippi Community College head golf coach Craig Lauderdale capitalized on the momentum his program gained from winning the 2007 Region XXIII title and making a trip to the NJCAA Division III National Tournament by signing Corinth High School seniors Caleb Bumpus and Carson Butler, and Booneville High School senior Riley Boren to letters of intent to play golf for NEMCC beginning in the fall.
“Riley (Boren) had a great senior year,” said Lauderdale. “He finished strong which is one of the things you look for in a kid, and he’s a hard worker. I think he’ll do well here at Northeast. Caleb (Bumpus) and Carson (Butler) both are strong players who come from a good Corinth program. They know what it takes to be a part of a successful team. Most importantly they all want to be here at Northeast, and believe me we’re excited they chose us.”
Boren carried a 39.9 scoring average as a senior for the Booneville Blue Devils this past season and was named to the All-Tournament team after shooting even-par, 72, at the Five County Tournament at Booneville Country Club.
Butler carried a 39.2 scoring average during the 2007 season, while his Corinth teammate Caleb Bumpus averaged 38.6 per nine holes. The Warriors’ duo led their team to a 2nd place division finish, and a third place finish at the 3-A MHSAA State Tournament.
“Carson’s cousin, Curt Butler, was a sophomore for us this year,” said Lauderdale, “so he’s very familiar with the program. He’s an example of what happens when a team like ours this year has success. Kids see what we got to experience, see the rings on our fingers, and they want to follow in those footsteps and be a part of that.”
