NORTHEAST GOLF FINISHES FOURTH IN STATE, QUALIFIES FOR REGION XXIII TOURNAMENT

BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi Community College’s golf team pieced together back-to-back undefeated season when it was part of Division III and now a member of Division II, the Northeast team is still reaching milestones.

Northeast qualified for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XXIII golf tournament at the Mississippi State University Golf Course in Starkville on April 27-28.

Northeast clinched its spot in the region tournament thanks to a fourth place showing in the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges’ (MACJC) State Tournament at Kirkwood National Golf Course in Holly Springs.

Northeast turned in a two-day 670 after opening the tournament with a 336. The Tiger linksters bettered their first day total by two strokes to pull away from fifth place Hinds.

Copiah-Lincoln Community College captured the 2009 state crown with a two-day 655 (329-326) while Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College began a series of four teams within five strokes of each other.

Mississippi Gulf Coast turned in a tournament total 666 (336-330) followed by East Mississippi Community College (334-335 -- 669), Northeast (336-334 – 670) and Hinds Community College at 671 (333-338).

Holmes (690), Northwest (692), East Central (700), Itawamba (707), Pearl River (739) and Jones County Junior College (772) rounded out the eleven teams in the field.

Northeast had a trio of golfers finished tied for fourteenth or better in the state tournament.

Blake Hatfield gained a four-stroke advantage from his day one score (84) to his final day total (80) to finish with a 164 – good enough to tie with Grant Goforth of Northwest Mississippi Community College.

Alex Downs registered a two-day total of 165 knotting him with Eric Ainsworth of Northwest and Trey Adams of East Mississippi for eleventh in the state.

Brandon Robbins turned in a fourteenth -place finish when he and East Central’s Daniel Johnson shared 166s for the two-day tournament.

Rounding out Northeast scorers were Daniel Singh with a 179 and Tyler Parsons, who made a 15-stroke improvement over the tournament, with a 183.
