NORTHEAST GOLFERS SHOOT SEASON LOW SCORE AT FIRST ROUND OF NORTHWEST INVITATIONAL

April 2, 2007

SARDIS, Miss.--  Northeast Mississippi Community College sophomore golfer Chase Williams (Alcorn Central) shot a 1-under, 71, during the first round of the Northwest Invitational MACJC (Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges) golf tournament at Mallard Pointe Golf Course in Sardis, Miss., and led the Tigers into third place overall heading into tomorrow’s round two. The Tigers trail Northwest Community College in second place by just one stroke (303). Meridian Community College holds the lead with a team score of 296 after round one.

Northeast’s team score of 304 was the best for Coach Craig Lauderdale’s team this season. Combined with Williams’ round of 71, the Tigers had four of its six golfers shoot rounds in the 70’s. Curt Butler (Corinth) shot 76, Jared Hight (Alcorn Central) shot 78, and Jared Harding (Cordova, Tenn.) shot 79. Also for Northeast, Hunter Shipman (Kossuth) shot 80 in round one, followed by Derek Devaughn (Booneville) with a round of 81.

“This is the toughest course we’ll play on this season, in my opinion,” said Northeast head golf coach Craig Lauderdale. “So, I’m extremely happy with the way the guys played. The course carries a 73.5 rating from the tips, and a hilly, tight course. Chase putted really well today. All our guys did, and if we putt that way tomorrow we’ll have a chance at finishing in the top two.”

Williams used three birdies and an eagle to get to his score of 1-under.

Second round play at the Northwest Invitational at Mallard Pointe is set to begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday morning, April 3.
