WILLIAMS NAMED TOP RETURNING PLAYER IN REGION XXIII
BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi Community College sophomore guard Ranisha Williams (Pontotoc) has been named one of the 2009-10 National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) Division I women’s basketball top-returning players for Region XXIII.
Williams, a 5-6 guard, averaged 9.0 points per game for the Lady Tigers during the 2008-09 season as Northeast qualified for the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges’ (MACJC) state tournament in Wesson last year.
“Ranisha brings a lot of quickness and speed to our team,” said Northeast women’s head coach Ricky Ford before season. “She will be a much better player for us this year because of her work during the offseason.”
During the 2008-09 season, Williams also three rebounds a game to go along with two assists and three steals per game for the Lady Tigers and Ford thinks Williams will improve on those numbers.
“Her ball handling ability has improved a lot but she still some work to do with her shooting,” Ford said. “She will contribute so much with her aggressive defensive ability.”
Williams joins 13 other members of Region XXIII schools to be named as top-returning players for the 2009-10 season.
Joining Williams is Coahoma’s Jonnetta Robinson, Copiah-Lincoln’s Lotoria Holder and Shareka Hunt, Jamey Ellis of Delgado (La.) Community College, East Central’s Hanna Lee, East Mississippi’s Martika Hull, Hinds’ Krystal Johnson, Itawamba’s Erin Birdie Bowens, Jones County’s Erica Moore, Meridian’s LaQuita Burrough, Mississippi Gulf Coast’s Kiara Johnson and Pearl River’s Ta’Keya Felder.
