FORMER TIGER BASEBALL STANDOUTS CONTINUE TO BE SUCCESSFUL AT UNA
BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi Community College’s former baseball standouts Kevin Williams and Chase Porch continue to be successful on the diamond at the next level now at the University of North Alabama.
Williams, a 5-11, 220-pound Corinth native, who plays behind the plate and also in the outfield for the Lions, was recently named the Gulf South Conference (GSC) Baseball East Division Player of the Week for the period ending on April 25. This was the seniors first career honor as a Lion after his performance in UNA’s last three victories.
Williams was 8-for-14 and slugged 1.286 on the week in three UNA victories. In the opener of a mid-week double dip against Ouachita Baptist, Williams was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer. After Alabama-Huntsville took control of the final GSC series this past weekend, the backstop went a combined 5-for-8 with six RBI and three runs, including two round trippers and a double as the Lions swept Sunday’s doubleheader and clinched the No. 3 seed in the upcoming GSC Tournament.
Porch, a 6-1, 190-pound outfielder from Blue Springs, has enjoyed much of the same success as his teammate at the plate for UNA. His last hitting spree came against Martin Methodist as the Lions downed the Red Hawks 14-7 on the road. Porch led UNA with four hits, including a home run to help seal the victory back on April 14 in Pulaski, Tenn.
To top it all off, the duo was selected to the All-GSC East Division First Team according to the latest release from the GSC on April 29. Williams received the honor as a catcher while Porch was unanimously chosen for the honor after his solid performance during his 2010 senior campaign.
The Lions (27-22, 8-7) are set to play in the 2010 GSC Baseball Tournament that is being played at the USA Stadium in Millington, Tenn, May 1-5.
