DIAMOND TIGERS RECEIVE HONORS
6 From NEMCC Named All State/Region

BOONEVILLE, Miss.--Northeast Mississippi Community College’s recent success on the baseball diamond is translating into individual honors for several team members. Sophomore Chase Porch (Blue Springs) has been named first team All-Region XXIII by the league’s coaches. Grabbing first team All-State honors were Sophomore Kevin Williams (Corinth), and freshman Patrick Hinton (Kossuth). Northeast’s All-State second team members are sophomores Jason Chism (Pontotoc) and Trey Griffin (Houston), and freshman Phillip Chapman (Clinton).

Porch was voted to the All-Region 23 first team as a designated hitter. This season the former East Union High School star has accumulated 72 hits in 167 at bats including 10 doubles, five triples, 10 homeruns, and 48 RBI for a team leading .431 average. Porch is a University of North Alabama signee.

Like Porch, Kevin Williams is also a UNA signee, who is a two-year starter for Coach Kent Farris at third base. This season Williams is batting .390 with 55 hits in 141 at bats with seven doubles, three triples, five homeruns, and 45 RBI.

Patrick Hinton joins Williams on the All-State first team after dominating the closers’ role for NEMCC this season. Currently the Kossuth native leads the nation in total saves with 11, while sporting 0.342 ERA in 26.1 innings pitched this season.

Former South Pontotoc Cougar Jason Chism was Northeast’s starting shortstop in ’08 and is batting .340 with five homeruns and 32 RBI. Trey Griffin, NEMCC’s number two starting pitcher behind Porch and sports a 6-1 record with a 4.57 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 61 innings of work. Chapman starred behind the plate as a freshman catcher for the Tigers this season while batting .340 with 14 doubles, 19 RBI, and five homeruns.

“When you get good players you have success,” said NEMCC head baseball coach Kent Farris. “When you have success, your players receive honors like this. All of these young men deserved to be recognized for what they’ve done so far. The best part for them is that they’re not done yet this season.” NEMCC will face Pearl River CC in round one of the Region 23 tournament in Poplarville on May 14.
