NORTHEAST TIGER CHOOSES JSU TIGERS
McWhorter Signs With Jackson State University
BOONEVILLE, Miss.--Northeast Mississippi Community College sophomore outfielder M.J. McWhorter (Blue Springs) has accepted a scholarship offer from Jackson State University and will begin suit up for the Tigers of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) beginning in the Fall of 2008.
JSU’s baseball team finished the ’08 season with a 37-22 overall record while going 18-5 in conference play in its second season under head coach Omar Johnson.
“My goal is to go down there and work hard,” said McWhorter, a former East Union High School standout. “If I do that I could potentially play early. It’s a very high level of baseball and I’m extremely excited about playing for Jackson State the next two seasons.”
During his sophomore season at Northeast, McWhorter helped lead Kent Farris’ Tigers to a runner up finish in the MACJC North Division with a 10-6 league mark. After appearances in both the MACJC State Tournament and the Region 23 Tournament McWhorter’s ’08 NEMCC squad finished with a 32-18 overall record.
The right-handed hitting outfielder batted .397 with five homeruns, seven doubles, two triples, and 34 RBI. McWhorter swiped 10 stolen bases in 11 attempts, second on the team behind another former East Union standout Drew Dillard (15-of-19).
