FORMER NEMCC TIGER WINS BAILEY HOWELL AWARD
JACKSON, Miss.-- Former Northeast Tiger Trey Johnson, a senior at Jackson State University, was awarded the Bailey Howell Trophy on Monday, March 26, 2007, during a ceremony at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Jackson, Miss. The award is given to Mississippi's top college basketball player.
Johnson played for the Tigers of Northeast Mississippi Community College during the 2002-03 season, averaging 19 points per game during his freshman year. Following his initial collegiate campaign, the Jackson, Miss. native transfered to Alcorn State University.
Johnson later transfered to JSU, where he just completed his college career by helping the Jackson State Tigers earn a spot in the NCAA tournament.
During his senior season, Johnson was the nation's second leading scorer in Division I-A with a 27.1 ppg average. He was named the Southwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year for the 2006-07 season, as well being named First Team All-SWAC, SWAC Tournament MVP, and a collegeinsider.com All-American.
Johnson was signed as a free-agent by the New Orleans Hornets of the NBA during the summer of 2007.
