SMITHER SURPRISES TIGER FOOTBALL TEAM ON MEDIA DAY

BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi Community College head football coach Ricky Smither had a surprise for his team during 2009 Media Day at Keenum Stadium on the Booneville campus.

Smither broke out new uniforms for the 2009 Tiger football team to wear during the team’s picture at the 50-yard line.

“It was the first time for them to see their new jerseys,” Smither said. “It’s tremendous to watch these kids relax.”

While the Northeast coaching staff had been pushing the team since early July, Tuesday’s media day was a day for the players to relax and become accustom to being near their new friends and surroundings.

“We started in July and these guys have been around each other for a couple of months now,” said Smither. “They have developed friendships and it’s carrying over.”

Smither knows that while the media day break was good for the players, the Northeast Tiger football team has to stay focused on one thing and that’s the first game of the season against Hinds Community College in just over a week.

“We have been pushing these guys from the first part of July,” Smither said. “Hinds has always got a good program. We know nothing about them and they know nothing about us. This first game is going to be a process of where we feel our way through.”

Northeast will open up its 2009 season against Hinds at Keenum Stadium on the Booneville campus on Thursday, August 27 before making a trek to Poplarville to battle the Pearl River Wildcats on September 3.
