Smither and company huddle for prayer after the teams first victory of the 2009 season against ICC on September 10, 2009. September 15, 2009 NORTHEAST FOOTBALL LOOKS TO GO 2-0 IN DIVISION PLAY BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi Community College head football coach Ricky Smither was in high cotton after picking up the program’s first win since 2007 on Thursday, September 10. Smither and company head to the Mississippi Delta in hopes of harvesting the Tigers second win in a row for the first time since knocking off Mississippi Delta and Coahoma community colleges in back-to-back weeks in late 2007. Northeast (1-2, 1-0 in North Division) will face off with Mississippi Delta Community College at 6 p.m. in Moorhead. Originally scheduled for a 7 p.m. kick, the game time changed to an hour earlier last week. The Tigers are looking to avenge a 35-0 shutout the Trojans handed them at Keenum Stadium during the 2008 season and enter Thursday night’s game with the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges’ (MACJC) second-best running back. Jeremy Cannon (New Albany) moved up to second in the individual standings after Northeast’s win against Itawamba Thursday night. Cannon, who has 426 yards on the season, is averaging 142.7 yards per game while toting the ball 60 times during the young Tiger season. Mississippi Delta (0-3, 0-1) has found a rough time during the 2009 season – falling to Southwest 13-12 and Copiah-Lincoln 34-7 during the first two games of the year. Coahoma took a 20-13 decision against Mississippi Delta last week as both teams opened up North Division play. Mississippi Delta’s offense has been where the Trojans have had problems amassing only 722 yards in three games this year and accounting for just three offensive scores. Two of those touchdowns have come off the arm of sophomore Jacob Land (Greenwood) who is 18-of-51 for 271 yards on the year. The Trojan offense might find a rough go of it on Thursday as well when Mississippi Delta faces a Northeast defense that accounted for three scores in the Tigers win against the Indians on September 10. LaDarrius Madden (Leighton, Ala.), Ky’Vari Bolden (Hoover, Ala.) and John Brown (Lakeland, Fla.) have combined for 59 stops on the year for the Tigers with Madden and Bolden getting into the scoring act against Itawamba. Bolden recovered a fumble in the end zone while Madden returned an interception for a score in the Tigers 28-21 win. Northeast’s defense has only given up 996 yards in three games – with 524 markers coming in a week two shootout with Pearl River. A pair of defensive backs Kelsey Clark (Cleveland) and Kennon Cattlidge (Indianola) who have combined for 45 stops on the year for the Trojans lead Mississippi Delta’s defense, which gives up 351 yards per game. Northeast’s kickoff will be an hour earlier than normal in Moorhead with the start coming at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast on The Shark 102.3 FM and is also available as a live stream on the NEMCC athletic webpage or at http://www.classicradiofm.com/ ###
