EAST MISSISSIPPI HANDS NEMCC DIVISION LOSS; TIGERS TIED FOR SECOND IN LEAGUE PLAY
BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi Community College carried nationally ranked East Mississippi to the brink for the first 29:48 but a blocked punt allowed the Lions to take the momentum into halftime and earn a North Division victory in the process.
East Mississippi (6-1, 4-0 in the North Division) blocked a Tyler Turner punt with 12 seconds remaining in the first half and toted the energy into the second half as the Lions added three second-half scores for a 48-10 victory in Scooba on Saturday.
Trayshun King and T.J. Ballou blitzed Turner with less than 15 seconds remaining in the second quarter causing a mispunt. Owens picked up the loose pigskin at the Tiger 30 and scampered to the end zone to give the Lions a 27-10 lead just before the half.
Northeast (2-5, 2-2) gave East Mississippi all it could handle in the first two quarters and had the Lions on the ropes early.
Northeast answered a 10-yard Randall Mackey scoring pass with a 37-yard Turner field goal with 5:34 to go in the first quarter. The 37-yard boot tied Turner’s long for the year.
East Mississippi took a 13-3 lead into the second quarter as Mackey hit running back Pat Shed on a 34-yard strike on the Lions ensuing possession.
Northeast stayed in the chase with the powerful East Mississippi offense as Clint Wilson (Olive Branch) found Dominique King (Tuscumbia, Ala.) on the first play of the second quarter on a 27-yard scoring strike cutting the lead to 13-10 after Turner’s extra point.
Northeast’s defense came up with a big stop that set the Tigers up for the score. John Brown (Lakeland, Fla.) forced a fumble inside the East Mississippi 30 and Bernard Smith (Atlanta) came up with the ball leading to Wilson hooking up with King on the first play of the second quarter.
Northeast’s defense continued to bottle up Mackey and the East Mississippi offense before the break including sending the pre-season All-American quarterback out of the game with 5:24 left in the half after a combined sack by Patrick Grant (Columbus, Ga.), Jereian Cole (Anguilla) and Smith.
Mackey returned with a vengeance in the second half throwing his fourth TD pass of the afternoon before giving way to back up Brad Henderson in the fourth quarter.
Northeast still has hopes of making the Mississippi Association of Junior and Community Colleges (MACJC) playoffs. The Tigers are tied with Northwest and Coahoma at 2-2 in the league and face both the Rangers and Tigers in the coming weeks. Northeast hosts Coahoma for Homecoming 2009 on Thursday before traveling to Senatobia to take on Northwest on Saturday, October 24.
