TIGERS, LADY TIGERS DROP SEASON FINALE AT SCOOBA

BOONEVILLE, Miss. –East Mississippi Community College basketball teams swept Northeast Mississippi Community College Thursday night in the Tigers and Lady Tigers’ regular-season finale played at Keyes T. Currie Coliseum in Scooba.

The Tigers finished their 2009 season falling to the Lions on a final of 81-53, while the Lady Tigers ended their regular season losing to the Lady Lions 76-61 on Thursday night.

Northeast Mississippi Community College’s men’s basketball coach David Robbins’ season ended with a record of 12-13 overall and 4-8 in the North Division as the Tigers failed to make the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior College’s (MACJC) 2009 state tournament after finishing in the Region 23 quarterfinals in 2008.

Bruce Jacobs (Horn Lake) led the Tigers with 11 points, four rebounds, and two assists, followed by Chris Gamble (Meridian) who pitched in 10 points and pulled down six boards on a night that Northeast only shot 35-percent from the floor.

In opening game of the evening, Ricky Ford’s Lady Tigers looked good in the first half, shooting 16-of-27 from the floor and hitting 5-of-6 from the free throw line and was only down by seven at intermission 44-37.

But in the second half, the Lady Lions bumped their lead to 18 points at the 13:59 mark by going on an 8-0 run to push the score at 61-43.

East Mississippi were led by sophomore forward Angelique Burtts of Conyers, Ga., with 18 points.

The Georgia State signee also added seven assists, six steals and five rebounds.  Jasmine Abrams of Columbus registered her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Javitia Eades of Kemper County added 11 points for the winners.

The Lady Tigers were led by sophomores Erika Wright (McNairy Central, Tenn.) who finished with 15 points, two assist, and six boards while shooting perfect from the charity stripe (7-of-7) and Eboni Crayton (McNairy Central, Tenn.) who shot 5-of-12 from the floor and had 12 points on the night.

“I was disappointed with our effort in crucial situations,” said Ford. “We were in position to turn the game around and we made turnovers at very important times.”

Ford’s team will travel to Ellisville on Monday, February 23, to take on the ninth-ranked team in the country, Copiah-Lincoln Community College in the MACJC 2009 State Tournament.

“We are looking forward to the challenges that face us next week in the state tournament,” said Ford. “I feel confident that if we go into the tournament with a lot of confidence in ourselves and determined to play with a high level of intensity we can be very successful.”

Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. at Jones County Junior College.
