NORTHEAST SOFTBALL SPLITS WITH HOLMES ON SOPHOMORE DAY

BOONEVILLE, Miss. –  Northeast Mississippi Community College’s softball team lived to play another day after splitting with Holmes Community College Monday, April 26 at Booneville City Park.

Northeast and Holmes both entered Monday’s contest with identical records in the North Division and after the league doubleheader that was how the two teams left.

Northeast battled back to take an 8-4 decision in the nightcap after Holmes forced Northeast to win by capturing a 3-2 victory in eight innings in the opener.

Northeast can clinch a spot in the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges State Tournament in Fulton this weekend if the Lady Tigers beat Northwest Miss., in a make-up game in Senatobia on Tuesday, April 27.

Northwest and Northeast faced off with each other on Friday, April 23 with the offensive fireworks coming in each team’s final at bat. Northeast clawed its way back into the contest with a three-run seventh taking a 5-4 advantage into the final Northwest at bat only to see the Lady Rangers put a two-spot on the board and walk away with a 6-5 victory.

Monday’s doubleheader also served as Sophomore Day 2010 for the Lady Tigers and it was a second-year player that made sure Northeast would have to make up its game against Northwest for a shot at the postseason.

Shardae Ward (Aberdeen), one of four sophomores on the 2010 squad, came through in the clutch for the Lady Tigers when she lofted a three-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth that gave Northeast a 3-1 advantage and the Lady Tigers kept the pressure on adding two more runs in the frame after Ward’s blast.

Ward, who came into the day with 14 hits on the season, belted five hits in her final games at Booneville City Park.

In addition to her three-run homerun, Ward picked up a a single in the nightcap pacing a seven-hit attack for the Lady Tigers with two along with Sara Beth Michael (Booneville) and Kelle West (Hamilton) who all had two knocks apiece for Northeast. Ward opened up her final home series with a three-hit performance against the Lady Bulldogs in the opener as the Northeast sophomore kept the Lady Tigers in the first contest.

After allowing Holmes to jump out to a 2-0 lead in the opener, Northeast battled back with solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Northeast broke the shutout with when Taylor Moore (Bruce) put an RBI single in play and the Lady Tigers tied the game at 2-all in the sixth when freshman catcher Leslie Hendrix laced into a solo homerun.
