TIGERS TAKE TWO FROM DIV. RIVAL NORTHWEST

BOONEVILLE, Miss.--  Northeast Mississippi Community College head fastpitch softball coach Jody Long and his 2008 squad grabbed an early upper hand in MACJC (Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges) North Division play by sweeping defending division champion Northwest CC in a double-header 4-2, and 2-1 on Tuesday, February 18, in Booneville.

The wins improved Northeast's overall season record to 7-8.

"The wind blew straight in from center field about 20 miles per hour all day," said Long. "That eliminated any homeruns for both teams and that may have gone to our advantage because we played great defense and pitched well. At the plate it was just our day to get the timely hits when runners were in scoring position."

In Northeast's game-one win over NWCC, sophomore Lisa Jansen (Frankfurt, Germany) was the winning pitcher improving her season record to 2-2. Jansen was also the winning pitcher in game-two moving her season mark to 3-2.

At the plate in game-one Shanika Randle (Houston) had two hits including a triple. Samantha Thunderburk (Pine Grove) had two hits including a double, and Kora Keith (Richmond Hill, Canada) added a double for Northeast.

Game two saw Callie Weaver (Houston) come away as the only Tiger with multiple hits, while Kora Keith notched her second double of the day.

Northeast softball will host Mississippi Delta CC in a division double-header at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 21, in Booneville.
