NEMCC's CALLIE WEAVER INKS WITH DELTA STATE UNIV.

BOONEVILLE, Miss.-- Northeast Mississippi Community College sophomore infielder Callie Weaver (Houston) has accepted and signed a fastpitch softball scholarship with Delta State University. She will suit up for the Lady Statesmen beginning in the fall of 2008.

Weaver, a two-year starting shortstop and left-handed hitter for Coach Jody Long at Northeast, led the Tigers to the 2008 MACJC North Division title along with a 30-16, 14-3 record this season. The division championship was the 7th in eight years for NEMCC, and this season’s 30 wins ties a school record set in 2003.

“Callie’s leadership is a major reason why we’re division champs and playing in the postseason right now,” said Long, whose Tigers will open play tonight in the MACJC (Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges) State Tournament in Clinton. “She has been the heart of our infield for two years now. She almost doubled her batting average this year and that showed Delta State that she was ready to come in and contribute.”

A former Houston H.S. Lady Hilltopper, Weaver becomes the 17th Northeast softball player to sign with a four-year university in six years under Coach Long.

“The whole time here at Northeast I knew I would go to Delta State my junior year,” said Weaver. “So I just focused these two years on getting better and the coaches here at Northeast helped me do that.”

After batting .282 with three homeruns and 21 RBI as a freshman, Weaver currently sports a .402 average in her sophomore season with 15 doubles, three homeruns, and 33 RBI. The middle-infielder’s fielding percentage is over .900 in her two seasons as the Tigers’ shortstop.
