NEMCC's WEAVER NAMED NFCA ALL-AMERICAN
Lady Tiger Shortstop Set Offensive Records in '08

BOONEVILLE, Miss.--Northeast Mississippi Community College softball standout Callie Weaver has been named a Second Team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

Weaver was the starting shortstop for Coach Jody Long at NEMCC the past two seasons, leading the Tigers to their seventh outright MACJC North Division title in the past eight years as a sophomore.

“It’s a great honor,” Long said. “Callie is one of those unique athletes. She grew up playing baseball and has an outstanding swing.”

Weaver’s 2008 batting average (.394) ranked second to Shanika Randle’s .405 for the Lady Tigers. Randle, who was also Weaver’s teammate at Houston High School, signed to play at Mississippi Valley State University earlier in the year.

“She broke several offensive records here,” Long said. “That’s what allowed her to move on, become successful and earn awards like this.”

Weaver, a lefty, led the Tigers this season in doubles (19), home runs (5), RBI (44), total bases (103), slugging percentage (.644) and walks (15). Weaver’s double and RBI totals for 2008 established new single season records for the school and her 63 hits rank only to Randle’s 70 for hits in a season.

During the 2008 campaign, the Lady Tigers finished 34-20 overall and 14-3 in the North Division and registered a fourth place finish at the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament. Weaver has signed a letter of intent to play for Delta State University beginning in the fall of 2008.
