NORTHEAST SOFTBALL PUSHES BACK HOME OPENER ANOTHER DAY

BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Tomorrow is another day…another rainy day and another day of waiting to begin the home slate for the Northeast Mississippi Community College softball team.

Northeast pushed back its home opener by another day after inclement weather was forecasted for the Booneville area on Friday.

Northeast’s 2009 softball home opener was supposed to be part of the Northeast Tiger Fest at the Booneville City Park but the Lady Tigers will have to wait a seventh day since playing in the Rush Invitational in Meridian on Saturday, February 22 to begin their home season.

With the event moved to an all-weekend slate, three teams are still deciding if they will participate on the second day of the tournament.

Snead State (Ala.) and a pair of Mississippi teams – Pearl River and Northwest – have expressed concerns about playing on Sunday but with the Northeast Tiger Fest already on schedule, organizers have drawn up a pair of schedules to accommodate the needs of each team in the tournament.

Bracket play, which was used to determine the winner of the tournament, is now eliminated from both weekend-projected schedules.

With all 12 teams participating in both days, the tournament has shrunk from 35 games down to 30 contests with Saturday seeing the lion’s share of the events – 18 games will take place starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday while 12 will happen Sunday.

If Northwest, Pearl River and Snead State exit the second day of the tournament, only 27 games will be played. Saturday will still see 18 contests but Sunday’s share will shrink drastically to nine events.

Saturday’s schedule is the same for both days whether the trio of teams exit the second day – with the host playing Bevill State-Sumiton (Ala.) at 1 p.m. to begin its 2009 home opener, followed by Northwest Shoals (Ala.) at 4 p.m. and the nightcap with Snead State (Ala.) at 7 p.m.

Northeast will also pick up a pair of games on Sunday no matter what – playing Southwest (Tenn.) and Calhoun (Ala.) – times are not set according on team participation.

Stay tuned to the Northeast Mississippi Community College athletics website for up-to-date schedule changes.
