MOTHER NATURE WINS NORTHEAST TIGERFEST SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

BOONEVILLE, Miss. — After careful consideration Northeast Mississippi Community College Head Softball Coach Jody Long has decided to cancel the 2009 Northeast Softball TigerFest due to the weather.

“I spoke with Richard Okulski with the National Weather Service in Memphis, Tenn.,” said Long. “As bad as I hate to admit it, the Ninth Annual Northeast Softball TigerFest winner is…Mother Nature.”

After getting the weekend forecast from Okulski, Long decided that with rain showers throughout Friday and a mixture of rain and possibly snow Saturday morning, it was time to call off the tournament.

With the high temperatures forecasted to only reach 40 degrees on Saturday with the probability of only have a feel-like temperature of 35 degrees or less, the cancellation was inevitable.

Northeast already had to push back its home opener by another day after inclement weather was forecasted for the Booneville area for Friday, February 27, but was hoping to get some games in on Saturday, February 28.

“I really need to play some games,” explains coach Long. “We have six games under our belt and we open the north division playing field on Tuesday at Holmes Community College.”

Unfortunately, that will not be the case and the Lady Tigers will anticipate playing some games and hitting the diamond on Sunday, March 1, at the Booneville City Park.

“I will visit the possibility of playing some games Sunday as the high temperature is showing 48 degrees,” said Long. “However, this is not a guarantee and will be based on the weather tonight (Friday) and in the morning.”

Indian Hills (Iowa) expressed interest in playing on Sunday. The Lady Warriors are making their spring tour through Mississippi en route to Pensacola, Fla., and have said that Sunday would not be too late to add an extra contest.

A pair of other teams is open to Sunday action. Northwest Mississippi Community College and Jackson State Community College (Tenn.) coaches say that they need to play as well.

“I will do everything in my effort to get at least two fields ready for playing softball,” Long said. “We need to play really bad.”
