NORTHEAST SOFTBALL DROPS HEART-BREAKER TO MISSISSIPPI DELTA
BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi Community College softball team now sits in a place that the program has never been before.
Northeast rests one game out of the fourth and final playoff spot in the Mississippi Association of Community/Junior College’s (MACJC) North Division standings after splitting with Mississippi Delta Community College on Saturday, April 4.
Northeast (12-16, 7-7) saw Mississippi Delta capitalize on six Lady Tiger errors in the nightcap to take a 6-5 win after Northeast captured the first game 8-3 with five runs in the seventh inning.
Northeast was able to mount a rally in the final inning of the second game against Mississippi Delta but was not able to get the tying run across the board.
Northeast battled back from a 6-4 deficit to make it a 6-5 game in the seventh but could not convert on the sixth and tying run.
Northeast knotted the second game at 4-all in the top of the fourth before Mississippi Delta battled back with a run in each the fourth and fifth inning taking a two-run advantage.
National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) pre-season All-American third baseman Kora Keith led the way for the Lady Tigers in both games.
Keith banged out six hits on the day including a double and triple. The Toronto, Ontario, Canada native turned the trick in the opener with a trio of hits including a double and triple as Northeast picked up three runs in the third, and went on for an 8-0 lead in the seventh before Mississippi Delta could get on the board.
Keith’s three hits paced a Lady Tiger attack that pounded out 10 hits against Lady Trojan pitching in the opener.
Nicole Singleton (Horton, Ala.) picked up the win in game one for Northeast to improve her record to 7-4.
Northeast limited Mississippi Delta to just four hits in the second game but saw six errors hit the board as the Lady Tigers dropped the one-run decision.
Northeast looks to improve its division standing when the Lady Tigers host East Mississippi Community College at Booneville City Park for a North Division doubleheader on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
