 FORMER LADY TIGER PITCHER MAKING HUGE SPLASH IN THE SWAC

 BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Former Northeast Mississippi Community College pitcher Lisa Jansen (Dietzenbach, Germany) made a splash during her first year as the ace of the Mississippi Valley State University squad.

Jansen, who played for Northeast in 2007 and 2008, led the Devillettes to their sixth straight Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship with a 16-5 five-inning win against Southern University over the weekend.

Jansen, a 5-9 junior, garnered the league’s Newcomer of the Year and Pitcher of the Year awards as well as being named to the first-team All-Conference team.

“She is an extremely hard worker,” said Northeast head softball coach Jody Long. “The awards and accolades that she received is a testament to her willingness to work hard.”

Northeast’s former pitcher helped lead the Devillettes to a perfect 17-0 record in conference and recorded 12 wins during the regular season before entering the SWAC Softball Championship Tournament April 23-26.

Jansen led the Devillettes to a 37-win season while leading the SWAC in seven different categories.

“She strives for excellence and is the type of kid anyone would want in their program,” Long said. “She is going to be successful and going to push everyone around her to be successful.”

The former Northeast Lady Tiger struck out 117 during the regular season – including 31 looking and racked up a league-leading 12 wins. Jansen recorded 12-strikeout games against North Carolina A&T on Feb. 10 and turned the trick again against Southern University just five days later.

Jansen also paced the SWAC regular season by allowing the fewest hits (76), runs (41), doubles (10) and earned runs (35).

Jansen continued her dominance into the SWAC Softball Championship Tournament fanning 14 batters during the four games Mississippi Valley State University played.

Jansen finished second in the league in earn run average (2.74) and opposing batting average with a .218 – missing out on the league lead by one-one thousandth of a percentage point.

After winning their sixth straight SWAC championship, Jansen finished the season with a 14-6 record while appearing in 21 games. Jansen started 19 games for the Devillettes throwing 13 complete games and 104.2 innings.

Jansen is not the only former Northeast softball player to help Mississippi Valley State University win its sixth straight SWAC championship. Shanika ‘Boo’ Randle (Houston), a teammate of Jansen at Northeast, hit .286 and appeared in 28 games for the Devillettes.

NORTHEAST CAPS 2009 SOFTBALL SEASON

BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi Community College’s 2009 fast-pitch softball season ended on Friday, April 24 to the eventual Mississippi Association of Community/Junior Colleges (MACJC) state champion.

Northeast (18-22) fell victim to the two-time defending state champion Copiah-Lincoln Community College 9-1 in the opening game of the MACJC State Tournament in Wesson.

Copiah-Lincoln went on to knock off a pair of South Division opponents en route to the title taking care of Pearl River and Mississippi Gulf Coast on Saturday, April 25.

Northeast freshman pitcher Nicole Singleton (Horton, Ala.) limited the Lady Wolves to just seven hits in the opening contest but Co-Lin shortstop Daniele Wilson made her two base knocks count.

Wilson connected on a grand slam during the Lady Wolves five-run fourth that put the game out of reach and also recorded a triple in the contest to go along with five runs batted in.

Northeast was able to scratch across a run in the top of the fifth breaking the shutout against Co-Lin.

Freshman designated player Amy Blakeney (Nashville, Tenn.) had two of the three hits for the Lady Tigers with sophomore Emily Barnes (Iuka) contributing the other – a double.

Northeast finished fourth in the North Division after division champ Northwest swept Holmes Community College on Tuesday, April 21 in Senatobia.

Northeast controlled its destiny to the state tournament going in the Lady Tigers season finale at Itawamba Community College only to see the Lady Indians take a pair of back-to-back walk-off wins against the Lady Tigers.

Itawamba captured a 3-2 decision in eight innings in the opener on a single in the bottom of the eighth and made it a sweep with a walk-off three-run bomb in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap 5-2.
