FORMER LADY TIGER PITCHER MAKING HUGE SPLASH IN THE SWAC
BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Former Northeast Mississippi Community College pitcher Lisa Jansen (Dietzenbach, Germany) made a splash during her first year as the ace of the Mississippi Valley State University squad.
Jansen, who played for Northeast in 2007 and 2008, led the Devillettes to their sixth straight Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championship with a 16-5 five-inning win against Southern University over the weekend.
Jansen, a 5-9 junior, garnered the league’s Newcomer of the Year and Pitcher of the Year awards as well as being named to the first-team All-Conference team.
“She is an extremely hard worker,” said Northeast head softball coach Jody Long. “The awards and accolades that she received is a testament to her willingness to work hard.”
Northeast’s former pitcher helped lead the Devillettes to a perfect 17-0 record in conference and recorded 12 wins during the regular season before entering the SWAC Softball Championship Tournament April 23-26.
Jansen led the Devillettes to a 37-win season while leading the SWAC in seven different categories.
“She strives for excellence and is the type of kid anyone would want in their program,” Long said. “She is going to be successful and going to push everyone around her to be successful.”
The former Northeast Lady Tiger struck out 117 during the regular season – including 31 looking and racked up a league-leading 12 wins. Jansen recorded 12-strikeout games against North Carolina A&T on Feb. 10 and turned the trick again against Southern University just five days later.
Jansen also paced the SWAC regular season by allowing the fewest hits (76), runs (41), doubles (10) and earned runs (35).
Jansen continued her dominance into the SWAC Softball Championship Tournament fanning 14 batters during the four games Mississippi Valley State University played.
Jansen finished second in the league in earn run average (2.74) and opposing batting average with a .218 – missing out on the league lead by one-one thousandth of a percentage point.
After winning their sixth straight SWAC championship, Jansen finished the season with a 14-6 record while appearing in 21 games. Jansen started 19 games for the Devillettes throwing 13 complete games and 104.2 innings.
Jansen is not the only former Northeast softball player to help Mississippi Valley State University win its sixth straight SWAC championship. Shanika ‘Boo’ Randle (Houston), a teammate of Jansen at Northeast, hit .286 and appeared in 28 games for the Devillettes.
