April 6, 2009 NEMCC WOMEN’S TENNIS TAKES CO-LIN TO BRINK BOONEVILLE, Miss. – Northeast Mississippi Community College’s women’s tennis team lost a heartbreaker to Copiah-Lincoln Community College Saturday, April 4. Northeast’s women’s tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision to the Lady Wolves on a pair of third-set tiebreakers. Northeast top singles player Briana Ashcraft (Alcorn Central) won her first set 6-1 before dropping the middle set 6-4 to force a third-set tiebreaker in her match on Saturday. Ashcraft came up short in the third set falling 10-4 in the deciding set. Mandy Hughes (New Site) gave her opponent all she could handle when Northeast’s sixth-ranked singles player went to a 10-7 third-set tiebreaker. Hughes opened her match with a 6-1 win but then dropped the middle set 7-5 forcing the deciding third set. “We played really well,” said first-year Northeast tennis coach Jeff Melson. “That is part of the learning process that will take the team further down the road.” Northeast dominated the Lady Wolves in singles where the Lady Tigers number 3-5 singles players each picked up wins on the day. Northeast third-ranked women’s singles player Alexandra Kriss took a 7-6, 6-2 victory in her match to go along with Chrisa Holley’s 6-2, 6-2 sweep in the fourth singles match. Katie Richey made it a perfect sweep through the third-fifth slots when the Booneville High School product easily won 6-2, 6-1. Kriss notched her second win of the day when she teamed with Cassondra Bishop (Alcorn Central) for an 8-6 decision in the top doubles match of the day. ###
