Frequently Asked Questions…

FOR EDUCATION MAJORS

I’m in college now: what courses do I take?

Seek advice from your NE advisor immediately and refer to your senior college catalog.   You must fulfill requirements for admittance into a certified college of education which occurs before your junior year.

Complete the Praxis I test during your freshman year (or even while still in high school) or early in your sophomore year.  (Note:  Students with a 21 ACT with no sub score below 18 upon entering college are exempt from taking the Praxis I.)  Prepare to take the Praxis II as a senior.  Both are required for a teaching license in Mississippi.

What financial aid is available to me?

Numerous forms of financial aid are available for Northeast and senior college students, Mississippi residents pursuing college educations, and for potential educators.

Follow the financial aid link to learn how to apply for this aid.

What are other ways to prepare for my teaching career?

  • Maintain a college GPA that reflects your full potential.
  • Take time to research trends, workforce needs, and other educational issues.
  • Volunteer to mentor students.
  • Begin a professional teaching portfolio to document your personal and professional achievements.
  • Stay in close contact with your NE advisor
  • Join Future Educators of America (FEA) at Northeast.
  • Contact the Mississippi Teacher Center at 601-359-3631 for assistance or visit on the web at http://www.mde.k12.ms.us/mtc/ .

How can I find out more about the Northeast/Mississippi State program where I can attend classes on Saturday and earn most of my teaching degree in Booneville?

Molly Goodson advises all of the NE+MSSTATE Weekend Program students. To receive more information, contact her by phone at 662-720-7219 or through E-mail at mdgoodson@nemcc.edu (Office:  Anderson 217, Northeast Mississippi Community College, Booneville).

Additional information from Mississippi State University can be found at http://www.distance.msstate.edu/elem .

Is there a way to finish my senior college degree in education at night?

The University of Mississippi at Tupelo offers courses for Elementary, Special Education and Secondary History or English majors at night (most meet from 6-8:45). Education majors are in Tupelo for all of their junior year classes. The fall of their senior year they have to go to Oxford two days a week for their Fall Block. The spring of the senior year is spent student teaching.

How will I transfer to a senior college?

  • Fill out senior college applications well in advance of your senior college admissions.  Be sure to check with the senior college for deadline dates.
  • Get an official NE transcript sent to your senior college.  Instructions and the transcript request form are available online at http://www2.nemcc.edu/Webmaster/Students/current/current.htm
  • Take and pass all three parts of the Praxis I test before admission to senior college schools of education.
  • Complete the general education core curriculum and maintain the required GPA for your senior college teacher education requirements.
  • Apply for admission to the teacher education program at your senior college.  (Note that you must apply both for admission to the senior college and to the teacher education program.)
  • Visit or call your senior college to make sure they have received all your applications and transcripts.
  • Apply for scholarships and other forms of financial aid early.  Watch deadline dates!  Be sure you have the required documentation.  Follow up with a phone call.  (Note:  William Winter Teacher Scholar Loan Program  money should be applied for in early January since they frequently run out of funds; many colleges have financial aid deadlines as early as February 1)
