  1. Many employers view cover letters as important as resumes.
  2. Cover letters are a must when sending a resume by mail.
  3. Present the cover letter and resume on identical kinds of paper.
  4. If sending a resume and cover letter by e-mail, make the cover letter shorter than a paper copy would be.
  5. Be sure to include the exact name and title of the person responsible for hiring.
  6. Write the cover letter so that it is directed at a specific position.
  7. Be concise and, by all means, use accurate grammar and punctuation.
  8. Communicate that you know some things about the company.
  9. Briefly present your skills; show that you have learned something about the company; restate your interest; say that you will be available and promptly close the letter.
