Library History

The history of Northeast Mississippi Community College dates back to the fall of 1948, when it opened its doors. The library had its beginning the same year on the second floor of the Administration Building, which was just nearing completion.  In February, 1949, the library was opened for student use with about 2,500 volumes on the shelves.   In the decade of the fifties the college grew, and so did the library.  In 1962, a new library building was opened just north of the Administration Building.  The Board of Trustees named the library the Eula Dees Memorial Library in memory of one of the trustees, Miss Eula Dees, from Tippah County.  Dedication of the new building was  held in May, 1963.  At this time the library had about 9,300 volumes of books and several hundred volumes of periodicals.

During the decades of the sixties, seventies and eighties, the library continued to grow in materials and services.  In the summer of 1989, a completely computerized library system was installed, consisting of 16 public access terminals, 4 administrative workstations and a console/terminal.  Today the library has 41 student computers.  An online catalog and several databases are available from any computer connected to the Internet.  Circulation and library usage continues to increase as more materials are provided.  The library continues to carry out its goals and objectives as it serves its patrons.
