NEMCC HONOR SOCIETY RECOGNIZED

Northeast Mississippi Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor fraternity was recognized at the Louisiana/Mississippi Regional Convention recently as a Five Star Chapter, the highest rating given. Upon return to the campus Phi Theta Kappa president Rusty Whitten of Corinth presented the Iota Zeta Chapter’s certificate to Northeast President Dr. Johnny Allen to hang in the Honors Conference Room on the campus. Northeast’s Iota Zeta chapter also captured the Dr. Shelby Harris Most Improved Chapter for 2006 at the convention held on the Jeff Davis campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College at Gulfport. Based on participation in regional meetings, the five star achievement program and submission of awards entries for competition, the winning chapter is determined by the regional coordinator and regional officers and is based upon the chapter’s revitalization of activities and programs. Phi Theta Kappa is an international organization composed of 1100 chapters at colleges in the United States and Canada. Phi Theta Kappa’s international headquarters are located in Jackson, Miss. The honor society seeks to foster the development of leadership and service, to provide an intellectual climate for the exchange of ideas and to encourage the establishment of scholarships for advanced education. Phi Theta Kappa is recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges as the official honor society for two-year colleges. Advisors of the Northeast chapter are Ray Harris, Andrea Mathis and Barbara Shackelford, all of Booneville.
