NEMCC’S IOTA ZETA NAMED MOST IMPROVED CHAPTER

Northeast Mississippi Community College’s Iota Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa was named the Dr. Shelby Harris Most Improved Chapter for 2006 at the Mississippi/Louisiana Regional Convention held recently at the Jeff Davis campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College at Gulfport. Based on participation in regional meetings, the five star achievement program and submission of awards entries for competition, the winning chapter is determined by the regional coordinator and regional officers and is based upon the chapter’s revitalization of activities and programs. Rusty Whitten of Corinth, president of the Northeast chapter, was presented the award by the Mississippi/Louisiana regional director Norma Hammill. Founded in 1918, Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society composed of 1200 chapters at colleges in the United States and Canada. International headquarters for the organization are located in Jackson, Miss. PTK seeks to foster the development of leadership and service, to provide an intellectual climate for the exchange of ideas, and to encourage the establishment of scholarships for advanced education. Approximately 48,000 new members are initiated each year. Recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges, Phi Theta Kappa is the official honor society of two-year colleges. Northeast’s Iota Zeta chapter is a “Five Star” chapter, the highest rating given any chapter, and has been recognized as an exemplary model. It is open to students enrolled full-time who maintain a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
