NEMCC HONOR SOCIETY RECEIVES AWARD FOR BREAKING THE CYCLE
OF POVERTY THROUGH LITERACY AND EDUCATION . . . ONE BOOK AT A
TIME. Dr. Ray Harris of Booneville, advisor for
Northeast Mississippi Community Colleges chapter of Phi
Theta Kappa honor society presents Rusty Whitten of Corinth,
chapter president, and Joel Barron of Red Bay, Ala., chapter
recording secretary, with a $200 check the chapter received from
Better World Books for collecting the most college textbooks
among all the colleges in the state of Mississippi at the close
of the spring semester. Northeasts Iota Zeta members
participated in the international service project/fund raiser
with Better World Books and the National Center for Family
Literacy to collect textbooks for Katrina evacuees. Phi Theta
Kappa members collected college textbooks on campus during spring
book buy-back and are currently conducting a fall book drives.
Phi Theta Kappa is an international organization composed of 1100
chapters at colleges in the United States and Canada and
headquartered in Jackson, Miss. The honor society seeks to foster
the development of leadership and service, to provide an
intellectual climate for the exchange of ideas and to encourage
the establishment of scholarships for advanced education. Phi
Theta Kappa is recognized by the American Association of
Community Colleges as the official honor society for two-year
colleges.
