NEMCC STUDENTS ATTEND CONVENTION

Eighteen members and three advisors of Northeast Mississippi Community College’s Iota Zeta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa attended the

89th annual convention of the international honor society in Nashville, Tenn., April 12 – 14.

Approximately 3600 Phi Theta Kappa members, faculty advisors, alumni and administrators from across the globe attended the world’s largest gathering of community college honor students. This multinational gathering featured three days of education, information, instruction and fellowship.

Speakers included Al Gore, former vice president; Jehan Sadat, internationally known activist for women’s rights, children’s welfare, and world peace and the widow of former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat; Kevin Sharp, country music singer and cancer survivor; and Sue Smith, national director of education of Keep American Beautiful, Inc.

Founded in 1918, Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society composed of 1100 chapters at colleges in the United States and Canada. International headquarters for the organization are located in Jackson, Miss. PTK seeks to foster the development of leadership and service, to provide an intellectual climate for the exchange of ideas, and to encourage the establishment of scholarships for advanced education. Approximately 48,000 new members are initiated each year. Recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges, Phi Theta Kappa is the official honor society of two-year colleges. Northeast’s Iota Zeta chapter is a “Five Star” chapter, the highest rating given any chapter. It is open to students enrolled full-time who maintain a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
