NEMCC HONOR SOCIETY RECEIVES CHECK FOR HELPING TO BREAK THE
CYCLE OF POVERTY THROUGH LITERACY AND EDUCATION . . . ONE BOOK AT
A TIME. Dr. Ray Harris of Booneville, advisor for
Northeast Mississippi Community Colleges chapter of Phi
Theta Kappa honor society, presents Cody Burchell of Booneville,
and Joel Barron of New Site, chapter presidents, with a $103
check the chapter received from Better World Books for collecting
college textbooks during the fall semester. Northeasts Iota
Zeta members participated in the international service
project/fund raiser with Better World Books to collect textbooks
for the National Center for Family Literacy. Phi Theta Kappa
members collected college textbooks on campus during fall book
buy-back and will be conducting another buy-back in January while
classes resume after the holidays. Also pictured is Phi Theta

Founded in 1918, Pi Theta Kappa is an international honor society
composed of 1200 chapters at colleges in the United States, US
Territories such as Guam and American Samoa, Canada, Germany,
British Virgin Islands, United Arab Emirates, Micronesia, Palau,
and the Marshall Islands. International headquarters for the
organization are located in Jackson, Miss. Phi Theta Kappa seeks
to foster the development of leadership and service, to provide
an intellectual climate for the exchange of ideas, and to
encourage the establishment of scholarships for advanced
education. Approximately 100,000 new members are inducted each
year. Recognized by the American Association of Community
Colleges, Phi Theta Kappa is the official honor society of
two-year colleges. Northeasts Iota Zeta chapter is a Five
Star chapter, the highest rating given any chapter. It is
open to students enrolled full-time who maintain a 3.5 grade
point average on a 4.0 scale.
