NEMCC PTK CHAPTER RECOGNIZED AT CONVENTION

BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- Northeast Mississippi Community College’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor fraternity was recognized at the Louisiana/Mississippi Regional Convention in 2008 as a Five Star Chapter, the highest rating given. Phi Theta Kappa president Ben Tucker of Booneville (right) presented the Iota Zeta Chapter’s certificate to Northeast President Dr. Johnny Allen to hang in the Honors Conference Room on the campus.

Northeast’s Iota Zeta chapter was also named a “Top 100 Chapter” at the international convention held in Philadelphia, Penn.

According to Phi Theta Kappa advisor Barbara Shackelford, “The term Five Star is interpreted as the peak of excellence when rating products and services such as restaurants, automobiles and hotels. The same holds true for chapters participating in Phi Theta Kappa's Five Star Program.

“Chapters gain recognition for their success by meeting the higher standards of quality programming that the term Five Star symbolizes. The strength of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society is determined by the achievements of chapters on the local level. Recognition for these achievements provides reinforcement and encourages a recommitment to chapter goals.”

Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in American higher education with 1,250 chapters on two-year and community college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions. More than two million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 100,000 students inducted annually. Recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges, Phi Theta Kappa is the official honor society of two-year colleges.

Advisors of the Northeast chapter are Ray Harris, Andrea Mathis and Barbara Shackelford, all of Booneville and Susan Scott of Corinth.
