NEMCC ORGANIZATIONS PARTICIPATE IN GREAT AMERICAN
CLEANUP-- Northeast Mississippi
Community College Phi Theta Kappa members recently partnered with
members of the Student Government Association, Delta
Epsilon Chi-DECA and the Baptist Student Union to help eliminate
trash and to beautify the Booneville campus. Cody Burchell of
Booneville, co-president of the Iota Zeta chapter of Phi Theta
Kappa, assisted with cleaning out a flower bed on campus.
Phi Theta Kappas International Service Program partner, the
Great American Cleanup, is the nations largest community
improvement program, built on a foundation of individual
responsibility and civic pride. Northeasts Great American
Cleanup activities are part of a larger national effort that is
expected to involve close to 2.5 million people, volunteering
more than 8 million hours to clean, beautify and improve 15,000
communities during 30,000 events in all 50 states. Activities
will include beautifying parks and recreation areas, cleaning
seashores and waterways, handling recycling collections, picking
up litter and removing scrap tires, planting trees and flowers,
and conducting educational programs and litter-free events.
Keep America Beautiful, Inc., established in 1953, is the
nations largest volunteer-based community action and
education organization. This national nonprofit forms
public-private partnerships and programs that engage individuals
to take greater responsibility for improving their
communitys environment. The Great American Cleanup™
is the organizations signature program that mobilizes
millions of volunteers to improve their communities through
hands-on participation.
Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, headquartered in
Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in American
higher education with 1,250 chapters on two-year and community
college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany,
the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the
Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the
United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions. More than
two million students have been inducted since its founding in
1918, with approximately 100,000 students inducted annually.
Recognized by the American Association of Community Colleges, Phi
Theta Kappa is the official honor society of two-year colleges.
Iota Zeta at Northeast is a five-star chapter, the highest rank
attainable, and was recently ranked in the top 100 of the 1250
chapters.
