MOCK ELECTION SET AT NEMCC
BOONEVILLE, Miss. -- Northeast Mississippi Community College
students will have a chance to have their voices heard before the
Nov. 4 general election.
The Iota Zeta chapter of Phi Theta Kappa honor society in
conjunction with the Student Government Association (SGA) is
sponsoring a mock election for Northeast students.
The election, which will be held on the schools website
(www.nemcc.edu), is scheduled for October 30.
Our goal has been the same as it was with the Presidential
debate and the voter drive, said Phi Theta Kappa
Vice-President of Leadership Brent Johnson, and that was to
encourage students to become more and more involved in the
political process on campus.
Students will have a chance to voice their opinions on who the
next President of the United States of America will be, as well
as make choices in the U.S. Senators and Representatives races.
Students will have the same chance, as they will at the polls
less than a week later as the Northeast ballot follows the
Mississippi Sample Ballot.
Students will get to pick from seven President and
Vice-Presidential candidate -- John McCain/Sarah Palin
(Republican Party), Barack Obama/Joe Biden (Democratic Party),
Chuck Baldwin/Darrell L. Castle (Constitution Party), Bob
Barr/Wayne A Root (Libertarian Party), Cynthia A. McKinney/Rosa
Clemente (Green Party), Ralph Nader/Matt Gonzalez (Independent)
and Ted C. Weill/ Frank McEnulty from the Reform Party.
Two U.S. Senatorial races will be on the ballot for NEMCC
students to pick from.
The race between Republican Thad Cochran and Democrat Erik R.
Fleming opens the ballot after the Presidential race while the
hotly contested race between Ronnie Musgrove and Roger Wicker
will see high placement to fill the unexpired term of Trent Lott.
The U.S. House of Representatives First Congressional race
will also dot the Northeast mock election ballot.
Democrat Travis W. Childers, Republican Greg Davis, Green Partys
John M. Wages, Jr. and Independent Wally Pang will be the
students choice in that race.
The mock election will mark the third political event held on the
Northeast campus during the 2008 fall semester. Students have
already been informed of their chance to make history with a
Presidential debate and a voter drive that say almost 90 voters
register for this years election.
