CDT 1113 EARLY CHILDHOOD PROFESSION
COURSE SYLLABUS
FALL 2006
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is an introduction to the profession of early childhood, types of early childhood programs, and theories of child development. Students are required to observe, assess, and record child behavior through laboratory experience. Room arrangements, software, play, and safety are some of the topics explored.

CREDIT: Three (3) Semester Hours. Two (2) hours lecture and two (2) hours lab.
COMPETENCIES/OBJECTIVES:
- Explain the Early Childhood Education Technology (CDT) program philosophy and policies.
- Identify expected behaviors of CDT students, children, parents, teachers, and instructors according to program policies.
- Demonstrate knowledge and ability to adhere to professional ethics and confidentiality standards.
- Use systematic approach to observing and recording child behavior.
- Use various methods of observational techniques.
- Record observation findings using a variety of methods.
- Discuss early childhood education and childcare movements to include history, theories, and practice.
- Identify philosophers of Early Childhood Education.
- Identify developmentally appropriate practice as defined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
- Explain the importance of lesson plans, behavioral goals, and objectives for young children.
- Describe types of early childhood programs and employment opportunities.
- Analyze the various types of childcare services including public, private, church sponsored, home-based, corporate, franchised, military, etc.
- Explore employment opportunities in the childhood profession career ladder.
INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES/STRATEGIES:
Lecture, Videos, Reading Assignments, Internet/Web Pages, Guest Speakers, Lab Assignments, Book Report, Early Childhood Philosopher Reports.
METHODS OF EVALUATION:
Lab Assignments, Lab Attendance, Class Attendance, Book Report, Early Childhood Philosopher Reports, Chapter Exams, Final Exam.
COURSE RULES/POLICIES:
- Students are expected to attend all class meetings and labs, and to complete all assignments. It is the student’s responsibility to acquire and submit all assignments on time. The syllabus and assignments are posted on the instructor’s website.
- LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!
- Please turn off cell phones before entering class. They are extremely disruptive!
- I DO NOT LIKE MAKE-UP EXAMS! Please be present for all exams. Make-up exams will be given at the instructor’s discretion. Make-up dates will be announced by the instructor.
- Out of order comments and talking will not be allowed. Please treat each of your classmates with respect.

GRADING:
Seventy-five (75) percent of grade – Classroom lecture, attendance, reading assignments, reports, and exams.
Twenty-five (25) percent of grade – Lab attendance and assignments.
A 95 – 100
B 85 – 94
C 75 – 84
D 70 – 74
F 69 - below
