CDT 1343  CHILD HEALTH AND SAFETY

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

              Health and safety practices in the care and education of young children.  Includes health and safety issues such as first-aid, CPR, universal precautions, communicable diseases, and child abuse.

 

CREDIT:  Three (3) lecture hours.

COMPETENCIES AND OBJECTIVES:

  • Discuss life-saving procedures for young children.
    • Demonstrate basic first-aid skills and CPR to include infant, child, and adult.
    • Discuss the importance of certification in CPR and first-aid.

 

  • Explain universal precautions.
    • Define universal precautions.
    • Discuss the importance of procedures and guidelines in preventing the spread of diseases.

 

  • Discuss child abuse and responsibilities of a caregiver.
    • Identify signs of abuse (emotional, sexual, physical, and neglect).
    • Outline documentation procedures when abuse is suspected.
    • Outline reporting procedures as required by state law.

 

  • Discuss common communicable diseases.
    • Identify specific common diseases such as chicken pox and common colds.
    • Outline stages of disease, methods of transmission, and immunizations available.
    • Determine the caregiver’s role and responsibilities as they related to the management of illness and state regulations.
    • Identify Mississippi State Department of Health regulations regarding immunizations.

 

  • Develop a safe environment for young children.
    • Identify appropriate safety guidelines for indoor and outdoor environments.
    • Evaluate toys and equipment for safety.
    • Analyze the caregiver’s role in management of accidental injuries.

 

  • Explore developmentally appropriate practices for introducing young children to basic health and safety concepts.
    • Identify safety concepts appropriate for young children.
    • Identify health concepts appropriate for young children.

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Attendance – Students are expected to attend all class meetings.  The new NEMCC Attendance/Withdrawal/Cut Out Policy will be followed.  The document is attached and can also be found on my website.  Students should notify the instructor if an absence is necessary.  Contact information is on the syllabus.
  2. Participation – Students are expected to have read the assigned information and to have prepared activities/projects as assigned by the instructor for each class meetings.  IT IS THE STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY TO ACQUIRE CLASS INFORMATION AND ASSIGNMENTS EVEN IF HE/SHE IS NOT PRESENT.   LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED!
  3. Health and Safety Project – Each student will plan, prepare, and present a project on a health and safety topic.  The project must include child- and adult-centered activities.  Specific instructions and the due date will be given sometime during the first two weeks of class. 
  4. Health and Safety Notebook – Each student will compile a notebook of fifty (50) newspaper articles related to health and safety issues in Early Childhood/Child Development.  The name and date of the newspaper must be included.  Articles cannot be copied.
  5. Weekly Assignments – Weekly assignments will be given at the instructor’s discretion.  Most will be posted on the (tentative) assignment chart. 
  6. Exams – Several chapter exams and a final will be given.  Exam dates will be posted by the instructor. 

 

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION:  Lecture, powerpoint presentations, DVDs, videos, guest speakers, webpages, group discussions and projects, library assignments.

 

METHODS OF EVALUATION:  Exams, Health and Safety Project, Health and Safety Notebook, Weekly Assignments, Attendance.

GRADING POLICY:

              The following grading policy will be followed:

 

              A           95 – 100

              B           85 – 94

              C           75 – 84

              D           70 – 74

              F            69 - below
