COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Planning developmentally appropriate activities in social studies, match, and science for the young child.  Lab activities with the children are implemented during Student Teaching I and II.

 

CREDIT:

Four (4) hours lecture.

COMPETENCIES/OBJECTIVES:

  1. Discuss the importance of developmentally appropriate social studies experiences in a classroom setting for young children.
    1. Identify the objectives of social studies for young children.
    2. Develop a sample social studies unit.
    3. Develop a file of social studies experiences to include activities, materials, tools, and resources.

 

  1. Discuss the importance of developmentally appropriate math experiences in the classroom for young children.
    1. List the basic concepts of math including one-to-one correspondence, counting, numbering, comparing, classification, etc.
    2. Identify the process of math development in the sensorimotor, preoperational, and concrete operational stages of development.
    3. Identify naturalistic, informal, and structured math experiences for the young child.
    4. List equipment and materials to teach basic math concepts.
    5. Develop a file of math experiences including activities, materials, tools, and resources.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. ATTENDANCE:  Students are expected to attend all class meetings.  Students will be asked to withdraw or will be cut out when 20% of class time has been missed.  Please contact me at 662-720-7214 (office, 662-534-4390 (home) or by email ssford@nemcc.edu if you must miss a class.  There is no excuse for not contact me and at least leaving a message.
  2. PARTICIPATION:  Students are expected to have read the assigned material and to be prepared for class discussion.
  3. PROJECT LEARNING TREE WORKSHOP:  The class will participate in the Project Learning Tree Workshop at CrowÕs Neck Environmental Center.  This will be a one day event and will be considered a school excused absence.  This is required.  The date will be announced by the instructor.
  4. RESOURCE NOTEBOOK:  Each student will compile a resource notebook of fifty (50) math, fifty (50) science, and fifty (50) social studies activities.  Format and due dates will be provided by the instructor.
  5. MATH, SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES ACTIVITES:  Each student will develop and make five (5) math games/activities, five (5) science games/activities, and five (5) social studies games/activities.  A lesson plan will be written and submitted for each activity.  Format and due dates will be provided by the instructor.  Activities will be presented in class, the CDT laboratory, and Booneville Head Start.
  6. EXAMS:  Several short exams and a final will be completed.  Students are discouraged from making up exams.  Exams may be made up only if you are sick and have doctorÕs excuse, when there is a death in the immediate family, and at the instructorÕs discretion!  Make up dates for exams will be announced by the instructor.
  7. NO CELL PHONES ALLOWED!   Cell phones will be confiscated and turned in to the office of the Dean of Students.  A student may retrieve a cell phone by scheduling a conference with Dean Kenneth Pounders in Estes Hall.

 

EVALUATION:  Exams, Participation in Project Learning Tree Workshop, Resource Notebook, Activity Lesson Plans, Teaching Materials, and Presentations.

 

GRADING POLICY:

The following grading policy will be used:  A          95 – 100

                                                            B          85 – 94

                                                            C          75 – 84

                                                            D          70 – 74
