Style Sheet for Composition I and II

1.  Paper—8 1/2 x 11 white, unlined, sturdy

  1. Ink—Black

  1. Font Style—Times New Roman

  1. Font Size—12

  1. Spacing—Double-space (three spaces between title and first line), including the Works Cited Page.

  1. Margins—One inch margins (top, bottom, sides)

  1. Name, date, and essay #—Handwritten on the back.

  1. Title—Center at top of page 1.  Capitalize the first and last words and major words of the title.  Do not use quotation marks.  Do not underline.  Skip 3 lines after title.  No cover sheet.  No transparent covers w/ spine.

  1. Paragraphs—Indent 1 inch or at least 5 spaces.  (If your computer tab is set differently, reset it.)

10. Page Numbers—Use Arabic numerals (2, 3, 4,…).  Start numbering on page 2, placing the number at the top right-hand corner.

11. Order of Work—Put your work together in the following order from the top down:  Final Copy on top; 2nd draft next; 1st draft next; Reader Responses next; and Invention Writing last.  Now you can see why I want you to use big paper clips.  Big paper clip goes in the left-hand corner.

  1.   List of Works Cited Page—Follow the directions beginning on page 652 in your text and the example on page 674.

  1.  Neatness—Print a copy of your paper and proofread it so that you can make corrections while it’s in the word processor rather than crossing out or striking out errors.  Do not depend on the spell check or grammar check functions of the computer.  If the printer is running out of ink or experiencing other kinds of problems, go to another computer and print your paper out properly.

  1. Saving Drafts and Final CopiesThis is why you need a disk.  Save everything.  I may misplace a paper (especially if it is turned in late) and you will need to print another copy for me to grade.
