Freshman fifteen often harder to loose than gain
By Michael H. Miller, Special to The Beacon
It is time to put another notch in the belt of life.
Only this time, it’s going to be used to loosen that belt after freshmen gain the dreaded “Freshmen Fifteen.”
Moreover, women are not immune to it either.
According to the leading website on the Freshman 15, freshmenfifteen.com, “Girls seem to be more vulnerable to the weight gain, and therefore need to take extra precautions. College females tend to consume more junk food on average then their male counterparts.”
The website warns of the inactivity of students leads to that dreaded weight gain.
“Females that were active in sports throughout high school, but are now no longer active need to be extra careful because without having daily physical activity, calories are not being burned like they used to. Healthy eating habits should be implemented, and exercise should be introduced to daily activity,” the website states.
The freshman fifteen is a condition that freshman college students suffer from during their first semester on campus. Freshmen tend to gain fifteen pounds (on average) as they adjust to college life. Do not worry the freshmen fifteen is not a disease or a virus. It is just a part of growing up as students learn about healthy eating habits and become more responsible for their actions.
Northeast offers a variety of activities when a student feels the urge to loose those extra pounds that they have gained through their first weeks on campus.
BurgessActivityCenter at the corner of Jefferson St. and the Boulevard is a full-service fitness facility open to Northeast students. The facility offers cardiovascular training as well as weight training in the same building while opening up for basketball, volleyball, aerobics and fitness classes and health screenings throughout the semester.
When in season, the CarrAquaticCenter offers Northeast students an Olympic-sized swimming pool surrounded by the 7,600 square foot facility. The pool is computer maintained for institutional purposes but can also be used for recreation.
