It is a known fact, going to college is astronomically expensive. So what if you found a fool-proof way to cover all the tuitions and expenses...through Vegas?
‘21’ is a recent film adaptation of the book ‘Bringing Down the House’ by Ben Mezrich, who told his own story of his extravagant Vegas adventure in pursuit of money for college.
The film revolves around five MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) students selected by their non-linear equations professor, Mickey (Kevin Spacey), to train and follow a system of counting cards in Vegas casinos on weekends.
The story follows the most recent member to join, Ben (Jim Sturgess). Shy and brainy Ben has just been accepted to HarvardMedicalSchool, his dream come true. Despite being the top of his class at MIT, Ben has yet to find a way to pay the costs of med school. When Ben’s sly professor presents the unusual opportunity to join the team in Vegas, his desire to pay for college overrides his hesitance.
With fool-proof methods, math, and signals, the team is able to obtain obscene amounts of money playing blackjack without ever being detected...almost. Although counting cards is considered neither illegal nor cheating, it is a dangerous method to pursue when money-hungry casino mangers lurk the corners and drool over surveillance cameras to sniff out such acts.
Money. Power. Adventure. This movie contains all. When you think all is well, you’re sucker-punched with another twist or surprise in a whirlwind of cinematic thrill.
