Student parking causes issue for church

Published 10/05/2009

As usual during the first few weeks of the 2009-10 school year at Northeast, student parking has been an issue.

As of Monday, October 5, students will no longer be able to park on the property belonging to St. Francis of Assasi Catholic Church.

According to chief of campus police and security Dean Bearden, another problem with parking has arisen. Bearden pointed out that there is another issue with parking that is not always a problem.

Bearden said students have been parking on the property located east of the intersection of North College Street and Ellis Avenue and just south of Collegeview apartments. This is not a parking area nor is it Northeast property. This property belongs to St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and it has respectfully requested students refrain from parking in this area.

The church recently advised Bearden about the problem and he warned the student body and entire Northeast community via e-mail and with signs posted around campus.

Any vehicle parked on church property starting October 5 will be towed at the owner’s expense by Williams Wrecker Service located on North College Street across from AutoZone, according to Bearden.

The church could be held liable if a vehicle parked on its property was damaged in any way and the church wishes to avoid that issue.

Bearden has given students notice to understand this issue. As of October 5, parking in this area is no longer a police/security problem. It is the vehicle owner’s problem.
